Facing geohazards on a Multi-risk analysis framework: towards a digital Twin for SafEty (MonTSE)

MonTSE project 2025-2028

The MonTSE project, Ref. PID2024-156639OB-I00 is funded by MCIN / AEI / 0.13039/501100011033 / FEDER, UE

This project focuses on the semi-quantitative analysis of multi-hazard risk of rockfalls and debris floods. Several scenarios are considered, both with historical precipitation data and short-term predictions. Rockfalls and debris floods can affect human activity individually in space and time, occur almost simultaneously due to meteorological trigger, or interact to amplify each other’s magnitude and runout. Previous studies of both phenomena carried out by the research team have identified critical aspects that demand further joint research to develop multi-hazard methodologies to manage the mitigation of their effects.

The general final objective of this project is the advance in the scientific knowledge of the critical aspects to evaluate the multi hazard risk on transport infrastructures and buildings affected by rockfalls and debris floods, as well as the impact on human lives and activities). This project aims to address the following especific objectives:

  • Objective 1: Advance knowledge of rockfall and debris flood hazards on high slopes and their relation with meteorological conditions.
  • Objective 2: To develop a methodology for multi-hazard assessment for rockfalls and debris floods for current and future scenarios.
  • Objective 3: To explore a common background on a digital twin paradigm for multi-risk quantitative analysis and short-term forecasting.

In order to specify the conceptual framework of the project, a pilot analysis area has been established (Montserrat massif in Barcelona). To carry out this study, a large amount of information and spatiotemporal parameters are required.  That information will be integrated in a common background on a digital twin to perform semi-quantitative multi-hazard risk analysis for current situation and short time forecasting.
