Impact geometry

On April 2023, a drop test was carry out at the Technology of Structures and Materials Laboratory (UPC. BarcelonaTech) to study the geometry of the impact.

Our main objectives are: on the one hand, observe if a threshold of cinematiq energy exists to generate fragmentation, and if the fragementation increases with the energy, de fuerza de impacto y/o de presión. On the other hand, to observe if the way in which the blocks impact influences these thresholds and the degree of fragmentation.

The samples, all made of the same material (solid brick), fall vertically on a flat and horizontal surface, minimizing the rotation as much as possible during the fall. It has been controlled that the samples hit a specific vertex, edge or face. The experimental setup has been specificallyt designed and built to control these aspects related to the geometry of the impact.

A total of 113 launches were done, three for each impact geometry, from a height of 0.12m to a maximum of 3.8m, with a shift of 25 and 50 cm.  Both the force and pressure of the impacts have been calculated using a program already available for this purpose, which takes into account the impact geometry and uses principles from the theory of linear elasticity and contact mechanics.
