The risk assessment associate with rockfalls is a complex issue due to the large number of parameters involved. One of them is the unstable volume and therefore is susceptible to fall. For its determination it is essential to have controlled the existing discontinuities, their disposition, spacing and persistence, as well as the existence of rock bridges that can give more resistance to the massif. Other element to analyse are the of hangovers due to their fragility.

Likewise, the existence or inexistence of premonitory movements and the characteristics of the landslides in terms of magnitude-frequency must be analyzed in order to have a greater knowledge of these and also of the affectation of infrastructures, buildings... close to the unstable areas and therefore, the block trajectory must be considered.

The improvement in the study of all these topics need input data with more quality, and the knowledge of their accuracy. Therefore, the use of geomatic techniques will be essential to achieve 3D and 4D information for the analysis.

The project has the overall goal of reducing the uncertainties of quantitative risk analysis (QRA) for rockfall by improving the quality of the input data and the modelling of block propagation downslope. To achieve this goal, we will concentrate on improving input data quality for rockfall modelling and the development of new tools for analysing and managing rockfall risk.The improvement in the study of all these topics need input data with more quality, and the knowledge of their accuracy. Therefore, the use of geomatic techniques will be essential to achieve 3D and 4D information for the analysis.


 

This project aims to address the following objectives:

  • Objective 1: Improvement in the basic information generated with geomatic techniques for rockfall risk analysis.
  • Objective 2: Integration of high-resolution (HR) input data for rockfall characterization and 3D/4D modelling.
  • Objective 3: Implementation of the previous achievements into the quantitative rockfall hazard framework and evaluation of the risk.

 



This website collects all information relative to the research project "Advances in rockfall quantitative risk analysis (QRA) incorporating developments in geomatics" (with acronim GeoRisk) which is being carried out at the Division of Geotechnical Engineering and Geosciences of the Department Civil and Environmental Engineering  (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech, UPC).
